Ankle sprains are a common injury, particularly among athletes, that occur when the foot is turned or twisted in an unnatural way, resulting in damage to one or more of the ligaments that support the ankle joint. The most common cause is internal rotation of the foot, but sprains can also be caused by external rotation (eversion). The ligaments most commonly affected are the anterior talofibular (ATFL), calcaneal fibular (CFL), and posterior talofibular (PTFL) in inversion injuries, and the deltoid ligament in eversion injuries.
Symptoms of an ankle sprain include immediate swelling and intense pain, as well as limited movement and instability of the ankle in more severe cases. To diagnose an ankle sprain, a doctor may perform an X-ray to rule out the presence of fractures, and an ultrasound or MRI may be used to evaluate the extent of ligament damage.
Ankle Sprain Pain Treatment
Rehabilitation following an ankle sprain is crucial for restoring joint stability and dynamic function. Treatment may include manual therapy, exercises to regain range of motion and strength, and the use of a brace or support to protect the ankle while it heals. A maintenance program may also be recommended to prevent the problem from recurring, usually carried out at home or at the gym.
Our state-of-the-art high-level laser can deliver instant pain relief in as little as five minutes–aiding in the reduction of inflammation and repair of damaged tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ankle Sprain
How long does an ankle sprain take to heal?
Recovery depends on severity. Grade 1 (mild) sprains often resolve in 1–3 weeks. Grade 2 (partial tear) typically takes 3–6 weeks. Grade 3 (complete rupture) can take 3–6 months with appropriate rehabilitation. Starting treatment early reduces recovery time and the risk of chronic ankle instability.
Should I use ice or heat on a sprained ankle?
Ice is recommended in the first 48–72 hours to reduce swelling and inflammation — apply for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours. After the acute phase, heat can help relax surrounding muscles and promote circulation. If in doubt, ice is always safer in the early stages.
Can I walk on a sprained ankle?
Light walking can be appropriate for Grade 1 sprains once initial swelling subsides. For Grade 2 and 3 sprains, avoid full weight-bearing until assessed. Walking on a severely sprained ankle before it is ready can damage ligaments further and significantly prolong recovery.
What is the difference between a sprained and a fractured ankle?
Both cause pain, swelling, and bruising, but fractures involve localised bony tenderness — especially over the ankle bones. An X-ray is needed to rule out a fracture. The Ottawa Ankle Rules are a clinical guide used to determine when imaging is necessary. If you’re unsure, get it assessed promptly.
How do I prevent ankle sprains from recurring?
Balance and proprioception training, ankle strengthening exercises, and appropriate footwear are the most effective preventive measures. Ankle taping or bracing during sport is also helpful while strength and neuromuscular control are rebuilt. Addressing any underlying hip weakness or biomechanical issues is equally important.
